Birds of a Feather Shrug

CRW_2356

Lately I have noticed a resurgence in the popularity of Cowichan sweaters. I love the vintage quality they have. The browns and taupes with their earthy designs. I was inspired to create something like it for myself. I wanted something a bit lighter so I could wear it more often (it’s rarely cold enough to warrant the original thick sweater around here). So a shrug was just right.

I am also inspired by the charming image of birds. Once I started looking for them began to see themĀ  everywhere, stamps, paper, fabric, and of course, in the sky. These birds sit contentedly on a branch looking at each other. They are birds of a feather.

This shrug was knit with 12 skeins of Mirasol Sulka (a lovely combination of wool, alpaca, and silk in a 16 stitch gauge) in truffle (9), cocoa(1), and snow white(2) and was knit on US 9 (5.5mm) needles.

You can purchase this pattern for $5 through paypal or you can order through Ravelry here! Patterns are sent via email in PDF format.

PS. Thanks for being my model Anja!

I recently purchased your gorgeous pattern “Birds of a Feather Shrug” and just ordered the yarn! I have a question though: Your pattern states to “work chart A starting at the S…..” Does this mean to follow the chart starting at the “s” from right to left…..then the next row do the same….or should I follow it from left to right on the second row. Thanks so very much. This will be my first garment and first time knitting stranded!! Any other instructions would be MOST appreciated!

      Hi Lori
The chart is worked back and forth. You start at the S and work right to left and then row 2 of the chart is worked left to right. I hope this clears it up!

      Hi Kim
You can order the pattern through Ravelry or you can click on the link on the pattern page. I don’t have any other Cowichan style patterns yet but I would recommend the Reindeer Sweater from Canadian Living (if you just google it the pattern comes up right away).
