Hi Elaine
The yarn is called Sulka by Mirasol, here is a link with some more information: http://www.mirasolperu.com/sulkayarn.htm
It's a wool/silk combination. A 16 stitch gauge yarn is one that knits up to 16 stitches per 4 inches in stockinette stitch. It is a bulky or 12 ply yarn.
Please let me know if I can be of any more help.

Thank you!
